It can be quite a task when you are starting out in the ham radio hobby. You may have a hard time deciding on whether to buy new ham radio equipment or to go with used ham radio equipment. If you go with new it can be a little expensive. I know for myself the Kenwood TS-2000 was over $2000 dollars. I have other antennas that I bought and have not set up due to size restrictions in my lot. So if I had a chance to do it again what would I do differently ?
Well I think I would go through Ebay and look at the used ham radios and equipment. The only thing I would stress is to check out the reviews and ratings on the seller before buying. Nobody needs a boat anchor and a bum deal. Now Ebay does have quite a few nice ham radios and deals. I have browsed thru there many times and I see some awesome deals.
There are plenty of ham radios that are a few years old and work very well. That's not to mention all the other pieces of Ham Radio Equipment that you will need. One idea is to go with a multiband mobile ham radio, power supply, manual antenna tuner and a multiband dipole antenna. Of course make sure you have the proper ham radio license to transmit on the ham radio bands you are planning on using. Getting your license requires some study material and your time. Taking the test for the various licenses is free, so just check in your local area for who is giving the tests. I have taken mine at the local college at the ham radio club. I took my Technician test at the local Ham Fest.

I have had my General Ham Radio License since June 2010. I have my Kenwood TS-2000 Radio and a Multiband Dipole Antenna. I use a Big MFJ Cross Needle SWR Meter and a MFJ 993B Automatic Antenna Tuner. My Power Supply is a Diamond GVZ-4000. I have other goodies in my Ham Shack such as a 11 Meter Radio, Scanner and Shortwave Radio. I have other Antennas that I am homebrewing, such as a Moxon for 17 Meters, 6 Meter Quad and a few others. I generally listen quite a bit while working on my computer.
